Sewing is good for the body, mind and soul.

Why learn to sew? Life skills are good for everyone to have. Balancing a checkbook, understand proper budgeting, be able to cook a healthy meal, changing a tire on the car, and preparing your own taxes are all good to have on that list. One thing that’s not common to see is sewing skills.

Besides the benefits of being able to replace a missing button, hem a pair of pants, or even create a gift, sewing provides students with a creative way to:

  • develop their finger dexterity and fine motor skills
  • build their self-confidence
  • learn copious amounts of patience
  • have a social creative outlet for gathering with friends
  • become aware and appreciative of the amount of time and work that goes into making clothing and sewn products
  • be mindful of where their clothing is coming from, i.e. sweatshops or not
  • reduce the negative environmental impact of throwing away clothing that simply needs repairs or updating
  • let their personality shine through their creations

Sewing School Offerings

Weekly Lessons

Ongoing sewing classes run in 6-week blocks.  They are different than 1-day workshops, which offer a specific project to learn. Rather, ongoing sewing classes offer a variety of projects and skills including machine sewing, hand sewing and embroidery. They provide a creative and intimate group setting that encourages new friendships and creative thinking. In an effort to make all the classes I offer more individualized and offer more one-to-one attention to the students, I am gearing the class sizes to be very small.  I’ll be able to do so much more with the students.  You may use the machines at my studio or bring your own.  If you are serious about sewing, I encourage you to purchase your own machine.  Every household should have a decent sewing machine.  I’m happy to help you find the right one.

  • Tuition:  $150 + GET
  • Includes:  Use of machines, supplies, basic materials.  If you want to make a specific item that requires special fabric and materials, you will need to purchase the fabric and materials yourself and bring to class.  I am happy to advise you and help you find the things you need.
  • Length:  6 classes @ 1 hour + 15 minutes per class
  • Enrollment: 2-3 students.  Must have a minimum of two students to start the block.  24 hours prior to your block starting, I will confirm with you whether or not we have enough students to run the block.  If not, you will be refunded your full fee.
  • Kids 10+ Beginning and Intermediate.  I will consider children as young as 8 on a case-by-case basis.
  • Adults 18+ Beginning and Intermediate
  • Make-up Policy:  There will be no make-up classes during the block.  Instead, there will be an open sewing studio on a Sunday afternoon every 6-8 weeks.  This will be an opportunity for the student to make up missed work.

Private Lessons

Private lessons give you the chance to learn exactly what YOU want to learn.  You will have the flexibility to set your pace and schedule.  I will work with you to help create a set of lessons that is right for you and is focused on what you want to learn.  You may use the machines at my studio or bring your own.  If you are serious about sewing, I encourage you to purchase your own machine.  Every household should have a decent sewing machine.  I’m happy to help you find the right one.
